How to Hull and Cut Strawberries

Everyone loves strawberries, and we mean everyone. Over 200 pests, including mites, slugs, moths, chafers, and aphids among others, love munching on this delicious berry. The high amount of pests loving strawberries has led to the heavy-handed use of pesticides, and the strawberry takes the lead in the Dirty Dozen list.

Don't let this bring you down and stop you from enjoying this delicious berry. Consider buying organic whenever possible or asking your local farmer how they fight to keep the bugs at bay. To remove some of the pesticide residue, bacteria or mold, you can try washing the strawberries in a vinegar solution. Not only does this clean the berries, but this trick will help to keep the berries fresh for longer. Just mix a 1:3 ratio of white vinegar to water and rinse the strawberries in the solution. Make sure to dry the berries thoroughly before storing them in the fridge. We just let them air dry to avoid more handling.

Strawberries contain a solid amount of fiber, vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and manganese. Apart from the obvious smoothies and ice cream, try these delicious berries in salads, or paired with this oozing oven baked brie cheese.

How to Hull Strawberries - Option 1

There are a few different ways to hull (aka destem) strawberries. The following is our preferred way to do it, even though you'll sacrifice your yield a little bit.

Place strawberries on a cutting board and cut as close as you can get to the stem. Discard stem.
How to Hull Strawberries - Option 2

This method is a different approach to hulling strawberries. If you want to minimize waste and keep a little bit of the stem intact, simply try this hulling method.

Grab a firm grip around the stem of the strawberry and twist to pull out the leaves. Additionally if desired, use a paring knife to carve out the last bit of the stem.

How to Slice Strawberries

Follow either one of the instructions for how to hull strawberries.

Place strawberries cut side down on the cutting board.

With the help of a small paring knife or a chef's knife, start slicing the strawberries.
How to Make a Strawberry Fan

Follow the second instruction for how to hull strawberries.

Place strawberries on a cutting board and start slice a little further than halfway to keep the strawberries intact.

Press gently to create a fan.
